John Mulaney Asheville Concert reviews
Distracted, poor song choice, wasted her talent
Mulaney's performance left me feeling conflicted. He showcased his exceptional voice and piano skills, accompanied by a fantastic backing band. The blend of various instruments, including fiddle and electric guitar, added depth to the music. However, his distractions and excessive talking detracted from the overall experience. While his humor was enjoyable at times, it dragged on for too long. Playing audience suggestions on an upright piano instead of his usual grand piano felt out of place. Additionally, his decision to include a lengthy Neil Young medley was questionable for a jazz musician of his caliber.
The lack of energetic songs with the full band was disappointing. When they did play upbeat tunes, it highlighted their talent and synergy. The show would benefit from more of these moments to showcase their skills effectively. The continuous display of old silent films in the background, though initially interesting, became a distracting element. The visuals, while synchronized with the music, felt excessive and took away from the live performance.
The sound quality during the show was commendable. The vocals were clear, and the instruments balanced well without overpowering each other. The overall volume was satisfying, allowing the acoustic beauty of the instruments to shine through. Despite these positive aspects, the show fell short due to Mulaney's presentation style and song choices. Adjustments in these areas could greatly enhance the overall experience.
